The generationOn Youth Leadership Institute

The generationOn Youth Leadership Institute is an innovative leadership training course for high school-age students interested in becoming leaders in their communities. Created and initially funded by Prudential Financial, this state-of-the-art training program employs a specially designed curriculum developed by the Center for Creative Leadership, one of the world's foremost authorities on leadership training. It incorporates the latest methodology for teaching key leadership skills such as goal setting, team building, project planning, and decision making-while emphasizing the importance of applying these skills to community service endeavors.

The Institute's courses are taught in communities across the country by trained representatives of local service organizations. In each course, 15-30 students receive approximately 30 hours of classroom instruction and participate in a variety of hands-on field exercises and a community service project.

The Institute was launched as The Prudential Youth Leadership Institute in 1996 by Prudential, with funding from the Prudential Foundation. Since 2000, it has been administered by The Points of Light Institute & HandsOn Network. In 2004, Prudential transferred ownership of the institute, and its name was changed to The Points of Light Youth Leadership Institute. In 2010, the Points of Light Institute launched a youth division called generationOn, which is driving the next iteration of the institute. generationOn is the global youth service movement igniting the power of all kids to make their mark on the world, and has a mission to inspire, equip, and mobilize youth to take action that changes the world and themselves through service.
