Shawn Shurm, John Rolfe Middle School, Richmond, volunteered in three different departments at the Medical College of Virginia Hospitals. He helped feed patients, make beds and take vital signs in the neurosurgery department; filled prescriptions and assisted patients in the pharmacy;
and assisted with mail, telephones and computers in the administrative offices. Over the course of the summer, he spent nearly 200 hours volunteering at the hospital.
"The most memorable part of this activity was helping others. It makes the patients feel so good to know that you are volunteering your time to try to help them, and it shows them you really care."
