Armando Martinez, James Madison Middle School, Seattle, raised $6,000 for and helped operate a regional nonviolence and leadership training program, the Summer Youth Leadership Institute. During the five-week seminar, Martinez recruited participants, supervised meal preparation, and trained his peers in conflict resolution. He taught 70 participants from seven states community leadership skills and how to apply the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King to resolve community conflicts.
"I tell other youth that giving to others is how you become a better and happier person. Helping the community builds your character."
