Mohana Kumar, Mt. Ranier High School, Des Moines, started her own book drive nearly five years ago and has since distributed more than 9,000 books to underprivileged children in the Seattle area. She collects books from donation bins in local schools, sorts them by age and reading level, and distributes them through Head start and other community programs. Kumar is working with the Federal Way Youth Commission, the High School Honor Society, and area Key Clubs to ensure that her work continues after she graduates.
"I found my own love for reading deepened as I shared in their joy. In addition, I felt more deeply connected and rooted in my community."
