Rafael Corna III
Rafael Corona, 11, of Van Buren Central Middle School in Van Buren, Arkansas, wrote and performed in a safety skit that's been seen by nearly 3,000 young children and parents. Rafael's project was initially prepared for a local safety contest. After winning first place in the contest, Rafael was asked if he would help spread safety awareness by presenting the skit to children throughout the community. Rafael performed the skit at five area elementary schools, several churches, and various community events. "A lot of the things in the skit were influenced by my mother, who often asks me what I would do in certain situations," said Rafael. Nearly 3,000 children and their parents were exposed to important safety messages about being home alone, answering the telephone, and talking to strangers. "I learned that kids my own age won't laugh if you have something important to share," Rafael said.
