Philana Omorotionmwan, 12, of Glasgow Middle School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, coordinated and performed in a series of plays for elementary school children at five area libraries during her summer break. Philana, who was motivated by her mom to keep herself busy during the summer, has been involved in this activity for the past five years. These theater projects have given Philana the opportunity to meet new people and recruit them to participate in the plays, and brush up on her organizational skills. In addition to selecting the plays, Philana built the sets, coordinated costumes, and promoted the free performances, which helped to entertain young kids while school was not in session. "I learned you can do something for the community and have fun at the same time," said Philana.
