Kathleen Jones, 17, of Concord High School in Concord, New Hampshire, always wanted to make a difference in her community and got the chance to do so when she launched an environmental group at her school. The Earth Service Corps is a student-run group that started with Kathleen, eight dedicated friends, and an advisor. Today, the group has nearly 70 members who help build and maintain hiking trails in the community, initiate and conduct recycling programs at the school, and plant trees throughout the county. Kathleen organizes weekly meetings, plans group projects, serves as a liaison with community groups, and handles all administrative work for the corps. "My experiences with the Earth Service Corps helped to remind me that people can work together to make a difference in the world, that there are people out there willing to make a change," she said. Kathleen has begun to train fellow corps members in the leadership of the group so it will continue making a difference after she graduates.
