Anna DeMartino, 13, of Howard T. Herber Middle School in Malverne, New York, conducted a fund-raising campaign at her school to raise funds to purchase Christmas presents for a family affected by domestic violence. Once Anna decided that she wanted to help make Christmas special for needy children, she contacted a local coalition for domestic violence and was assigned a family for which to purchase gifts. She then approached her school principal and got permission
to conduct a fund-raiser at the school, which produced $175. With the money, Anna purchased winter gloves, hats, toys and stuffed animals, wrapped them herself, and delivered them to the coalition. "It helped me to be thankful of the things that I have in my life," she said.
