Rachel Salzer, 13, of Rootstown Middle School in Rootstown, Ohio, has volunteered for the past two years at the local Animal Protective League. Her activities ranged from simply petting the abandoned and mistreated pets to coordinating fund-raising activities to support the organization. Rachel volunteers every Saturday and most Sundays, during school breaks, and throughout the summer to help advance the cause of animal protection. She has initiated and implemented a candy sale that raised $1,200, and is in the midst of preparing for an auction to aid a $300,000 campaign to build a new shelter. "I have learned that I cannot save them all, but each animal saved or spared cruelty is a positive in a very negative situation," Rachel said.
