Tabitha Kulish, 13, of Centerville Middle School in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, established Operation Cheer Up, an organization that makes homemade greeting cards and distributes them to nursing home patients, shut-ins, U.S. military personnel in Bosnia, and others in need of cheering up. The project grew from Tabitha's volunteer experience at a local nursing home. She realized that many residents received no visitors or mail, so she made greeting cards and gave them to those who had none. Since then, Tabitha has learned how a simple card can make a world of difference. She has recruited many of her friends to help, and has convinced area businesses to donate supplies. "The greeting cards we make let people know that they are not forgotten and remind them that they are very special people," said Tabitha.
