Elizabeth Cable, 12, of Johnson County Middle School in Mountain City, Tennessee, initiated a program for which she sews baby blankets and donates them to the county health department for distribution to needy families. Elizabeth's project began to materialize last winter when she saw a mother carrying a baby whose arms and legs were exposed to the extreme cold. Knowing how bitter the winters in the Appalachian Mountains can be, Elizabeth decided that warm baby
blankets might help the many children whose parents could not afford warm clothes. She contacted a local factory for fabric donations and has single-handedly sewn 203 blankets, far surpassing her original goal of a dozen. "I felt this was a worthwhile activity because it helped people who could not help themselves - babies," Elizabeth said.
