Selena Nuutinen, 14, of Tomah Middle School in Tomah, Wisconsin, spent her summer break volunteering at a local Veterans Hospital. Her interest in volunteering originated with a class trip to the hospital during which she and fellow students spent time with mental health patients. She realized that just visiting with these patients made a difference in their lives, so she decided to volunteer three days each week for eight hours a day throughout the summer. Her duties included feeding the patients, stocking supplies, and washing dishes. "Volunteering was a great experience," said Selena. "It helped me become more mature and learn about real life."
