Jonathan Quarles

founded Students Against Violence Everywhere (S.A.V.E.), a group that helps discourage crime through creative presentations. Jonathan, who lost both a close relative and dear friend to murder, was so devastated by grief that he wanted to make sure no one else has to suffer the way he did. “My goal for this project is to reduce crime among students in the K-12 setting, if not eradicate it, so that no child will have his or her impressions of the value of life shaped by senseless murder,” said Jonathan. He recruited members to join the group, and trained others. Since the group was founded in 1997, they have worked in collaboration with many organizations, including the Neighborhood Violence Prevention Collaboration, Community Coalition, and the National Honor Society on various projects, including leadership workshops. “In the past year, not one teen was killed by violence in Flint,” said Jonathan.
