State Honoree

Rachel Bunch

Rachel Bunch, 14, of North Little Rock, Ark., a ninth-grader at Horace Mann Magnet Middle School in Little Rock, has helped spread awareness of the dangers of mixing automobiles and alcohol by volunteering with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) for nearly two years. Rachel began her involvement with the group by handling clerical duties, but then “the more I worked in the office, the more opportunities I had to participate in a variety of other activities,” she said. Rachel studied state laws on drinking while driving and helped lobby to lower Arkansas’ legal threshold for blood alcohol content to .08%. She represents MADD at state conferences and health fairs, speaks to school and community groups on the dangers of drunk driving, and even assists local law enforcement officers during sobriety checks. Rachel also reaches out to her close friends with her message and as a result, “some of my friends have decided not to drink.”
