Kirsten Wright, 14, of Twin Falls, Idaho, a member of the Girl Scouts of Silver Sage Council and a ninth-grader at Vera C. O’Leary Junior High School, organized a two-day seminar on self-defense for 13- to 18-year-old girls in her Girl Scout service unit. After reading many articles in the local newspaper about violence against women, Kristen felt compelled to help girls learn how to defend themselves. “Since I’m a student of Kung Fu, I thought a self-defense seminar might be of interest to other girls beginning to date,” said Kirsten. For the seminar, she arranged for a local police officer to discuss safety tips for young women, and invited a counselor to address dating and “date-rape.” Her seminar also included a brief introduction to quick and easy self-defense moves taught by Kirsten’s martial arts instructor. Twenty Girl Scouts attended Kirsten’s workshop, and she is planning to expand it by offering a future session to all interested girls in the Twin Falls area.
