Precious Thomas, 9, of Suitland, Md., a sixth-grader at the Arts and Technology Academy in Washington, D.C., is a motivational speaker and fund-raiser for HIV-positive and AIDS children living in the Washington metropolitan area. “I am living with HIV,” she said. “It is a part of my life.” Precious and her mother began speaking about the effects of HIV and AIDS at churches, civic organizations, and schools when Precious was two years old. In addition, Precious helps raise money for housing and other life necessities for HIV and AIDS children through the Bell Atlantic Precious Thomas Fund of Whitman Walker Clinic, and serves as AIDS ambassador for Camp Heartland. Precious believes it is important for people of all ages to learn about HIV and AIDS. “Everyone needs to be educated about the facts before they judge or mistreat someone living with HIV and AIDS,” she said.
