Laura Corlin

New Hampshire

Laura Corlin, 13, of Strafford, N.H., an eighth-grader at Strafford Middle School, created “Musical Youth Performers,” a group of teens who present benefit concerts to seniors and other community groups. After Laura and her voice teacher sang at a community nursing home, she noticed that many residents had no visitors. Laura decided to organize her performing friends into a group that would both visit and entertain lonely seniors. “MYP” grew from a goodwill effort between youth and the elderly to a popular community performing group that helped raise over $5,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. “Spending time with the senior members of our audiences is very rewarding,” Laura said. “One elderly lady took my hands and thanked me over and over for coming to visit her and sing to her. I felt as if we had just exchanged gifts that could not be wrapped and put under a tree. It’s never about making money. It’s about making a difference.”
