State Honoree

Steven Engelhaupt

Steven Engelhaupt, 13, of Dublin, Ohio, a seventh-grader at Grizzell Middle School, raised more than $24,000 to buy new toys to donate to a holiday toy drive for underprivileged children. After graduating from the Indian Guides program at the age of 11, Steven wanted to continue helping others. “I really like to see other people smile,” Steven said. “I started looking for a way to make Christmas brighter for needy kids.” Steven earned money for the new toys in several ways. First, he collected used toys from friends and people in the community. He then cleaned, repaired and sold the used toys at second-hand stores, using the proceeds to purchase new toys for donations. He also arranged a special fund-raiser at a local sports complex. During each of the past two years, the Meijer Corporation, owners of a toy store where Steven and his mother shopped, surprised Steven with a $10,000 donation. “They said it took the actions of a child to touch them in a way that no one else could,” Steven said. “I tell everyone that they can help others by just getting out and doing something – anything they can think of – just so it is for someone else. I know that if I can do it, others can and together, we make huge differences.”
