Laura Hunsaker, 18, of Gillette, Wyo., a senior at Campbell County High School, established a youth task force to combat crime in her school and encourage community service among the students. The TAC Team (Teens Against Crime) provides youth with opportunities to reduce crime in their school and in the community through education, activities and volunteerism. To assist her with the development of the TAC Team, Laura met with the crime watch coordinator at the Gillette Police Department. Next she gained the support of her vice principal, who provided Laura with a classroom to hold the task force’s lunch-time meetings. Soon after, she began recruiting students to join the task force – the TAC Team now boasts 35 active members. Their first project was to host a non-alcoholic after-prom party at a local roller rink. The party was such a success, the team received support from the police department and has since been working with the department on a regular basis – team members have been trained in fingerprinting, assisted with undercover projects and participated in ride-alongs with police officers. “When I see my peers enthused about helping in every service project without getting paid, it pleases me that maybe in a small way I am contributing to the worldwide picture,” said Laura.
