Jena Sims, 14, of Winder, Ga., a member of the Barrow County 4-H and an eighth-grader at Winder Barrow Middle School, has raised $17,000 to benefit the American Cancer Society through a variety of fund-raising activities. Jena has been an active participant in the society’s “Relay for Life” fundraiser since she was 8 years old. But after losing both of her grandfathers to cancer, she decided to step up her involvement in the battle to stop the disease. “I never considered the impact this disease would have on my life personally,” Jena said. In addition to participating in existing fundraising programs, Jena recently created her own event – an overnight “lock-in” for teenagers. She worked with members of her relay team to secure a location, advertise the event, arrange for entertainment and refreshments, and recruit adult chaperones. More than 100 individuals attended, which raised $2,100 for the American Cancer Society. “It’s not about me, but about what all of us can do to help,” said Jena, who is aiming to raise $50,000 by the time she is 18.
