State Honoree

Shannon Casey

Shannon Casey, 17, of North Easton, Mass., a senior at Oliver Ames High School, raised $1,000 to help a cystic fibrosis patient pay for life-saving lung transplant surgery and more than $400 to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. “I became involved in fundraising for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation when my cousin was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis in 1996,” Shannon said. When she learned that a family friend who also had the disease required a lung transplant, Shannon decided to expand her efforts. She organized numerous activities to raise money, including bake sales, yard sales, Christmas tree sales, a collection drive at local businesses, a dance, and door-to-door solicitation. At every event she worked to educate the public about the devastating effects of cystic fibrosis, hoping to convince others to continue donating to help find a cure. “Before my cousin was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, neither I nor anyone in my family had ever heard of it,” Shannon said. “Now it has become a very big part of our lives and always will be. I plan to assist in the fundraising to find a cure until one has been found.”
