State Honoree

Elizabeth Volzke

South Dakota

Elizabeth Volzke, 11, of Eureka, S.D., a member of the Girl Scouts of Nyoda Council in Huron and a fifth-grader at Eureka Public School, performs a variety of spirit-raising tasks at a local assisted-living center, volunteers at a day care center, and sings at church services and other events. Elizabeth began her burst of volunteerism by vowing to perform 100 hours of community service to commemorate the 100th anniversary of 4-H. She began by offering to visit and play games with lonely residents of the senior center where her mother works. Elizabeth and her sister also made door decorations, party favors, and tray liners for holiday celebrations, paying for supplies with money earned from recycling aluminum. Elizabeth was soon visiting and playing piano at other nursing homes, as well. She then expanded her volunteering to a children’s day care center because “I love babies and young children,” Elizabeth said. She plans to continue her volunteer efforts. “What a wonderful feeling it is to help others.”
