Erin Beaulieu, 14, of Alexandria, Va., a member of the American Red Cross of the National Capital Area and an eighth-grader at Whitman Middle School, started a Red Cross student chapter at her school. Inspired by her community-minded older brother, Erin wanted both to help those in need and encourage her fellow students to get involved in volunteering. She decided that a Red Cross chapter at her school would accomplish both goals. “I am very interested in the American Red Cross because it is a way that I can help many people,” said Erin. After talking with the local Red Cross organization, Erin convinced a teacher to sponsor her new group. To encourage interest among the students, Erin designed and hung posters throughout the school. More than 30 students responded to Erin’s effort and joined the student chapter. Together, the group helps the American Red Cross respond to the needs of the community during crises and emergencies. “I can see the difference it has made in other people’s lives,” said Erin.
