State Honoree

Amber Frome

Amber Frome, 17, of Edgar, Wis., a senior at Edgar High School, created a teen volunteer program at her community library to assist librarians by shelving returned books, organizing new book sections, providing patron support, and helping with the children’s summer reading program. “I noticed that the library always seemed a little messy and the librarians didn’t have enough time to fit it all in,” Amber said. “I asked what I could to do help.” Amber began spending hours every afternoon shelving “the never-ending pile of checked in books.” Then she started organizing new sections for young adults and new books. Amber recruited other teen volunteers and formed H.O.L.E. (Help Our Library Excel). Together they made posters advertising the summer reading program, organized a petting zoo, made signs for the new library sections, shelved, catalogued, cleaned and helped wherever they could. “When I step back and look at the library today, I can really see an improvement,” said Amber. “I would love to tell the whole world what a rewarding experience volunteering can be.”
