Hina Kato, 16, of Oiso, Kanagawa, a 4th grade student at Jishukan Secondary School in Isehara, Kanagawa prefecture, is an active proponent of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, serving as a UN ambassador and promoting the plan in presentations to public officials, private corporations and elementary schools. Hina got involved after researching how her coffee was produced and learning about fair trade and sustainable consumption. After being selected as a UN ambassador, she traveled to Switzerland and Sweden, countries where the development goals are being developed and implemented. Her experience motivated her to promote the goals through public speaking; she also holds Sustainable Development Goals classes for elementary school students, leading games to engage the children in environmental protection topics.
