Xinyi Li

Xinyi Li, 18, of Beijing, a senior at the high school affiliated with Renmin University of China, led an initiative to provide children in underserved communities with the resources they need for a 21st-century education, and the support to stay engaged and motivated at school. Xinyi felt privileged to have abundant educational resources throughout his childhood that kept him interested in learning, but a volunteer experience in his first year of high school showed him that not all students share that experience. After research that included in-depth interviews, Xinyi led a team to develop a series of educational courses with a dual focus – academics and critical thinking skills, and interpersonal skills to support students in engaging with the world around them. Since its inception, Xinyi’s initiative has reached more than 1,600 students. “I want to inspire my peers,” he said. “Every smile we make can result in unlimited influence and potential to the people around us.”
